After multiple games of phone tag with one of the Innkeepers I'd contacted...finally I secured a date to go stay at their Inn. I booked my room minutes ago and was looking forward to conducting some field research. The Inn normally requires a two-night stay but the Innkeeper made the exception for me, which was very kind.
In just a few days, I would head North of Santa Barbara where I'd stay at an Inn that most closely resembles one I'd like to own. It wasn't my style exactly...but it was similar enough to what I had in mind.
The Owner forewarned me she'd have very little time to chat - as Saturdays were a very busy time. But I didn't have much other free time to take the trip, so I figured I'd get as much out of it as I could. If she could spare any time...I'd take it. If not, I'd observe and absorb.
Observation can be one of the most effective forms of study. I'd examine the amenities, the service and the little details that I liked or didn't like...and I'd take notes on it all.
My friend was joining me - to make it part work, part fun. A girl's weekend was just what the doctor ordered, and she'd be an astute observer who might notice things I don't. Top it off with a glass of wine at the end of the day and it will be time well spent.
Sweet Dreams,
Me

You should visit a few different inns before you lock your creative. Like a hit song, it's a compilation of many influences. Familiar but different.
